SGC Plant Sale – September 18, 2010

The Somerville Garden Club Perennial and House Plant sale will be held Saturday, September 18, in Davis Square. An array of perennials, trees, shrubs, and houseplants are available, and knowledgeable Garden Club members can answer any questions. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Davis Square Statue Park, at the intersection of College Ave. and Holland St., opposite the T. The sale takes place rain or shine. Admission is free, and the site is wheelchair accessible.

The SGC’s popular sale offers a wide choice of plants at reasonable prices. Classic perennials for both sun and shade–lilies, iris, sedum, penstemon, ferns, and hostas–are joined by trees, shrubs, and a small “connoisseur” collection. Also for sale is a selection of houseplants, from reliable clivias and scented geraniums to large potted plants for a dorm room or living room corner. Each plant is labeled with care instructions, including light and soil requirements.

Continuing a long tradition of pass-along plants, club members and local gardeners donate plants that have performed well in their gardens as well as being particularly beautiful. Other sale highlights include a Horticultural Information table, garden and flower arranging items, and books with a horticultural theme. Canvas bags with the Somerville Garden Club logo will be for sale to carry a purchase home. This is a good time to join the Garden Club, and the club’s informative newsletter will be available.

Proceeds fund the club’s community planting and educational programs. Plant donations are gratefully accepted; for more information or to volunteer, please visit www.somervillegardenclub.org/plant-sale/.
