On Wednesday, October 13, Seija Hälvä, garden coach, designer and consultant, will address the Somerville Garden Club on the topic “Edible Landscaping with Herbs.”
Seija will talk about the wide range of herbs appropriate for landscaping, that also bring fragrance all year long. Seija will offer ways to propagate and grow both annual and perennial herbs and explain what they require for healthy growth. Useful not only for cooking and drinks but also for gentle healing, herbs may be harvested until late fall for fresh use or for preparing and storing for prolonged use. Seija will illustrate her talk with slides of herbs in various landscapes.
Seija Hälvä has deep roots in gardening and horticulture. Having grown up on a farm she completed her PhD studies in Horticulture at the University of Helsinki, Finland; she has done research on herbs as a visiting scholar at the U. Mass. Department of Plan and Soil Science. Seija has studied Landscape Design at the Landscape Institute of the Arnold Arboretum, Harvard University, and at the Boston Architectural College.
The SGC meets on the second Wednesday of every month from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Tufts Administration Building (TAB), 167 Holland St., second floor. The meetings are open to the public and are wheelchair accessible.
