January 12, 2022 Virtual Meeting – House Plant Success

As with our outdoor gardens, many things can go wrong when you grow plants indoors. Learn the factors that make for happy houseplants, including light, water, and temperature, and how to provide them. Common houseplant pests and diseases are also on the agenda, as well as how to treat them.

Bonnie Power has been a Massachusetts Master Gardener and member of the MMGA Speakers Bureau since 2016, and a serious outdoor/indoor gardener most of her life. Curious and research-oriented by nature, she has many horticultural interests and areas of expertise. Bonnie holds both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Zoology, which informs her perspective on the management of garden insects; she is also an administrator for a “sick houseplant” group on Facebook. A lifelong passion for organic gardening and soil health recently led Bonnie to take on a new role as manager of the MMGA Soil pH Testing team. She also volunteers at Garden in the Woods, a Native Plant Trust botanical garden in Framingham, where she is a guide. At home in Marlborough, Bonnie grows a variety of vegetables and ornamentals (with a bias for natives), organically, of course.

All Somerville Garden Club meetings are free and open to the public. 7-9pm. If you are interested in attending our virtual meeting, but have not received the meeting link via email, or are not a SGC member, you can email info@somervillegardenclub.org for the link.

Color Gardens: Beautiful Perennial Combinations from Spring through Frost

In this presentation from designer Maria von Brincken, you’ll learn “color pairing”, the first step to create a stunning combination. Graphics will introduce color theory and texture as design tools that are easy to use to create your own beautiful combinations in seasonal sequence. Examples of both sunny and shady flower combinations blooming from spring through fall can be used right away. Or inspire you to create your own. Examples are from gardens in New England, the US, and abroad. A digital handout with details of the plant combinations shown will be made available.
