Somerville Plant Sale 2008
Perennial and House Plant Sale

The annual SGC Perennial and House Plant Sale is planned for Saturday, September 20th, 2008 from 9:00am-1:00pm in Davis Square (rain or shine), in the park at the intersection of College Ave and Holland St (across from the Somerville Theater).

This eagerly awaited event is the premier opportunity for gardeners and first time buyers to find a large and interesting variety of healthy plants, shrubs, herbs, houseplants and trees, at very reasonable prices. Continuing a long tradition of pass-along plants, club members donate plants that have performed well in their gardens, some particularly beautiful varieties. Plant selections suit all garden needs, from dry shade to full sun. Each plant is labeled with care instructions, including light and soil needs.

Each year there are plants of particular interest to connoisseurs, one of the reasons participants show up promptly at 9am.

Other specialties of the event include a horticultural information table, a children's table, the club's informative newsletter, and this year, SGC imprinted reusable tote bags and eco-friendly coir bricks will be available.

The sale benefits the educational and horticultural activities of the Somerville Garden Club, an all-volunteer organization, including plantings at the Central and West Library Branches, Powderhouse Rotary, and a soon to be remodeled site along the Community Path at Highland Ave. The club also sponsors monthly programs on gardening and landscaping methods and related environmental topics, open to the public. Meetings are held the second Wednesday of every month at 167 Holland St, second floor.

Davis Square is well served by public transportation. Drivers will find parking lots within a few blocks of the square. We suggest bringing a grocery cart, a wagon or a few friends, to take purchases home.

Admission is free and the site is wheelchair accessible. Plant donations are gratefully accepted and there are many ways to get involved.

PLANT DONATIONS ARE NEEDED:

  • Any varieties of plants (perennials, house plants, shrubs, etc) from the most common to the most exotic
  • Divide any candidates ASAP so that the plants will have some time to recover and look enticing for the sale
  • Label each plant with the plant name, growing preferences and other pertinent info

There are TWO drop off sites, starting September 1st:

  • Teresa McGowan’s driveway at 264 Willow Ave (near Ball Square). 617-666-9997
  • Katharine Van Buskirk's driveway at 19 Chester, St. (between Davis Sq and Mass Ave)

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:
