The Somerville Garden Club was founded in 1994 by a group of Somerville
residents to promote home gardening as well as the horticultural possibilities
of Somerville’s public spaces. Of the club’s 200 members, some
are experienced gardeners, some are beginners; some are long-time residents,
some new residents; and about a third come from surrounding communities.
Members receive a monthly newsletter with horticultural
articles and notices of upcoming events, special private tours of members’
gardens and horticultural spots in the region, and a discount at a local
garden center.
The SGC meets on the second Wednesday of every month
7:00–9:00 p.m. at the Tufts Administration Building (TAB), 167 Holland
St., second floor. The meetings are open to the public and are wheelchair
accessible. Most meetings begin with a roundtable discussion of seasonal
gardening issues, followed by a speaker, and ending with a raffle. Please
join us at an upcoming meeting.
From the beginning, a major objective of the SGC
has been the maintenance and improvement of public sites. The club’s
volunteer projects include multiple sites around the city: Powderhouse Rotary, Central and West Branch Libraries, and a bike path location (which is under construction) at Highland Road.
Membership is $25/year (April-March). Please make
checks payable to Somerville Garden Club.
